FORT PORTAL, UGANDA
Traditional rituals to install Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the new Omukama of Tooro have been completed, paving the way for the formal public coronation at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal today, Tuesday, September 29, 2026.
The overnight traditional ceremonies, conducted from September 28 into September 29, marked the transition from the mourning period for the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV to the beginning of the new reign.During the rituals, Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, now known as Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, led a men-only torch-lit procession from Rwengoma Palace through Fort Portal to Karuziika Palace.
The traditional proceedings included his entry through the Mugabante Gate following a symbolic mock battle, the spearing of a bull and his seating on the royal throne. He also turned the royal drums upright and struck them nine times each, while other royal regalia were restored, including the uncovering of the lion statues.
The rituals carry deep cultural significance within the Tooro Kingdom and formally signal the beginning of the new monarch's reign under the kingdom's customary traditions.
The public coronation programme is taking place today at Karuziika Palace after a church service and blessing at St John’s Cathedral of Ruwenzori Diocese.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is attending as the chief guest, alongside royal family members, kingdom officials, government representatives, cultural leaders and invited guests.
The main ceremony includes the formal handover by the Omusuuga, the head of the Babiito royal clan, followed by speeches, the crowning of the new Omukama and the restoration of the Tooro Kingdom flag and anthem.
The coronation marks a significant moment in the history of the Tooro Kingdom as Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I formally assumes the responsibilities of the institution of Omukama.
The ceremony is being closely followed by cultural institutions, government officials and communities across Tooro and beyond as the kingdom begins a new chapter under its new monarch.
