Equal Opportunities Committee Renews Focus on Zombo Roads as Songa’s Advocacy Gains Attention

ZOMBO, UGANDA — The Parliamentary Committee on Equal Opportunities has highlighted the poor state of roads in Zombo District, reinforcing concerns raised by local legislators that inadequate infrastructure continues to create disparities in access to essential government services.

The Committee, which is conducting an oversight exercise in the West Nile Sub-region, visited Zombo this week to assess challenges affecting service delivery and opportunities for communities.

Road infrastructure featured prominently in the concerns raised during the engagement, with poor connectivity affecting the movement of people and goods and making access to health centres, schools, markets and other public services more difficult for residents in remote areas.

The Committee’s intervention also brings renewed attention to the longstanding advocacy of Hon. Laurence Biyika Songa, who has consistently highlighted the strategic importance of improving the Nebbi–Goli–Paidha–Zombo–Warr–Vurra road corridor.

Songa’s advocacy has centred on the argument that road infrastructure should not only be viewed as a transport issue, but as a foundation for broader development. Improved connectivity along the corridor would link communities to markets, facilitate the movement of agricultural produce, improve access to social services and strengthen economic interaction across the region.

The corridor is particularly significant for Paidha and surrounding communities, which serve as important commercial and administrative centres in the area. Better road connectivity would help ease transportation challenges for farmers, traders, students, patients and other road users who depend on the network for their daily activities.

During his time in Parliament, Songa repeatedly raised the road issue as part of broader calls for increased government investment in infrastructure in the region. His advocacy has kept the corridor on the development agenda, particularly the need to improve connectivity from Nebbi through Goli and Paidha to Zombo, Warr and Vurra.

The latest concerns raised by the Equal Opportunities Committee therefore provide another parliamentary platform for the road question, particularly from the perspective of equity in public investment and equal access to government services.

For residents of Zombo and neighbouring areas, the road debate goes beyond smoother travel. It touches on the ability of communities to reach hospitals, schools and markets, while also determining how effectively farmers and businesses can participate in the wider regional economy.

The Committee’s ongoing oversight is expected to provide further insight into infrastructure and service-delivery gaps across West Nile, including challenges that require greater attention from government.
