AMOLATAR — National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General Richard Todwong has received a group of senior former opposition members who have crossed to the ruling party in Amolatar District.
The group comprises former members and leaders associated with the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) and Alliance for National Transformation (ANT).
Todwong arrived in Amolatar on Saturday afternoon, where he was received by NRM District Chairperson Olwit Kamilo, Resident District Commissioner Francis Rwotlonyo and other members of the district party leadership.
He later formally welcomed the former opposition members into the NRM during an event attended by local party leaders and supporters.
The group was led by Okot P. Bitek, former Member of Parliament for Kyoga County in the 11th Parliament and former FDC Legal Secretary.
Bitek is among the principal figures behind the latest political movement, which has seen several former opposition leaders in Amolatar announce their decision to join the NRM.
The development marks another movement of opposition figures into the ruling party as political parties and political actors continue to mobilise support across different parts of Uganda.
The new members are expected to participate in NRM structures and activities in Amolatar District.
