SHARON OTIENO’S MOTHER APPEALS FOR LENIENCY AS COURT CONSIDERS OBADO’S SENTENCE
The mother of slain Kenyan university student Sharon Otieno has appealed to the court to spare former Migori Governor Okoth Obado a life or death sentence following his conviction for her daughter’s murder.
Obado was convicted over the 2018 murder of 26-year-old Sharon Otieno, who was seven months pregnant at the time. The case has remained one of Kenya’s closely followed murder trials, involving a prominent political figure and the killing of a young university student.
Appearing before the court during the sentencing proceedings, Sharon’s mother said the family had forgiven Obado and appealed for leniency.
She further asked the court to consider Obado’s role in supporting the three children Sharon left behind, including the responsibility of ensuring their welfare and future.
The court is now considering the appropriate sentence following Obado’s conviction.
The family’s appeal introduces a deeply personal dimension to the sentencing proceedings, with the victim’s mother placing forgiveness and the welfare of Sharon’s children at the centre of her plea.
