South Africa’s Deadly Weekend: Two Mass Shootings Leave at Least 28 Dead

South Africa is facing renewed concern over gun violence after two separate mass shootings near Johannesburg and Cape Town left at least 28 people dead and more than 40 others injured within hours.

The attacks occurred at places where people had gathered for ordinary social activities, with gunmen opening fire on patrons at a tavern in Wedela, west of Johannesburg, and later at a shisanyama entertainment venue in Lwandle, near Cape Town. Police investigations into both attacks remain ongoing.

Wedela: 18 killed as police hunt eight suspects

The first attack happened at about 9:30 p.m. on Saturday in Wedela township on Johannesburg’s West Rand.

Police said eight armed men, reportedly carrying AK-47 rifles and pistols, opened fire on people outside a tavern before entering the premises and continuing the shooting.

Initially, 17 people were confirmed dead and 15 others wounded. The death toll subsequently rose to 18 after one of the injured victims died in hospital. Police are still searching for the suspected attackers.

Police have said the motive has not been established. Investigators are considering several possibilities, including robbery, retaliation and possible links to illegal mining activities in the West Rand. Authorities have also noted that the same tavern had reportedly been the scene of a shooting about a month earlier.

Lwandle: 10 killed at entertainment venue

Only a few hours later, another mass shooting occurred in Lwandle, outside Cape Town.

Police said gunmen entered a shisanyama  an entertainment venue that also sells braaied meat  at approximately 1:46 a.m. Sunday and opened fire on patrons.

Ten people were killed and 11 others injured. Five victims died at the scene, while another five later succumbed to their injuries after being taken to medical facilities.

Western Cape police have established a multidisciplinary investigative team led by serious violent crime detectives. No arrests had been announced as of September 28.

Police are examining possible business rivalry as one line of inquiry, following reports that customers were buying alcohol elsewhere and bringing it to the venue. However, authorities have stressed that the motive has not been confirmed and the investigation is continuing.

Part of a wider wave of violence

The weekend killings came just days after another mass shooting in KwaMakhutha, near Durban, where 11 people were killed and three injured during a shooting at a house party. Police said the victims included a woman believed to have been pregnant. Investigators have considered possible rivalry between criminal groups, although the motive has not been confirmed.

The concentration of deadly shootings in different parts of the country within the same week has renewed attention on South Africa's persistent problems with illegal firearms, organised crime and violent criminal networks.

Reuters reported that South Africa continues to experience one of the world's highest murder rates, while police and security agencies have been working to tackle organised and gang-related violence.

Police investigations continue

Authorities have launched manhunts in both cases, but the identities of the perpetrators and the precise motives behind the attacks remain under investigation.

In Wedela, police have opened murder, attempted-murder and property-damage cases and deployed detectives and specialised units. In Lwandle, police have increased deployments while investigators search for evidence and possible suspects.

For families who lost relatives, however, the investigations are only the beginning. The immediate challenge is now to identify those responsible, establish why the attacks occurred and determine whether wider criminal networks supplied the weapons or organised the violence.

The latest killings have once again placed South Africa's struggle with gun crime under intense scrutiny  while communities mourn victims caught in shootings that investigators are still working to understand.
