KAMPALA, UGANDA -Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) has continued to expand and improve prisoners’ accommodation as part of efforts to address congestion and enhance welfare in correctional facilities across the country.
The expansion programme, which began in 2022 through the UPS Prisons Engineering Gang, is aimed at increasing accommodation capacity while improving essential facilities such as sanitation, ventilation, lighting, security and access to clean water.
At Isingiro Government Prison in the South-Western Region, three newly constructed wards have increased accommodation capacity by 225 inmates. The facilities include improved sanitation and ventilation, better lighting and security, as well as a solar-powered water pumping and purification system.
In the Mid-Western Region, Isimba Prison Farm has also benefited from the programme through the construction of a new giant twin ward capable of accommodating an additional 200 inmates.
According to UPS, similar infrastructure projects have been completed at Ruimi, Amita, Bubulo, Masafu, Lira, Luzira Women, Rukungiri, Ngogwe, Mityana and Yumbe Prisons, among other facilities.
The programme is continuing, with additional construction and rehabilitation projects underway in different parts of the country.
UPS says the growing capacity of its Prisons Engineering Gang is enabling the service to rely increasingly on its own technical expertise in delivering correctional infrastructure, while contributing to improved living conditions and the effective management of prison facilities.
