Drito Demands Review of Uganda’s Mineral Concessions
By Oringi Denis
KAMPALA, UGANDA — Upper Madi County Member of Parliament, Hon. Martin Andi Drito, has called for greater transparency and accountability in the allocation and management of Uganda’s mineral concessions, warning that the country could be losing billions in potential economic benefits.
Drito made the call while contributing to a motion for the adoption of a report by the Australia-Uganda Parliamentary Group following its working visit to the Parliament of Australia in Canberra and participation in the 24th Africa Down Under Mining Conference in Perth, Australia, held from September 2–10, 2026.
The legislator noted that Uganda is endowed with substantial mineral resources, including significant gold deposits, but questioned whether Ugandans are receiving adequate benefits from the country’s mineral wealth.
Drito raised concern over the allocation of some mining concessions to individuals and companies that, he said, may lack the technical or financial capacity to effectively develop and manage the mineral resources under their control.
He urged Parliament to ensure that the report provides clear information on the individuals and companies holding mineral concessions in Uganda, including the locations, operational status and level of development of the mines.
Drito further proposed that concessions which remain inactive or underdeveloped should be subjected to review and, where necessary, withdrawn and reallocated to capable investors with the capacity to exploit the resources responsibly.
He emphasized that stronger parliamentary oversight is essential to ensuring that Uganda’s mineral resources contribute meaningfully to national development, employment and improved livelihoods.
“Mineral concessions should not simply be held on paper. They must translate into actual investment, production and economic benefits for Ugandans.”
Drito called on Parliament and relevant government agencies to strengthen monitoring of mineral concessions and ensure that Uganda’s mineral wealth is developed in the national interest.
